Victorian rental standards 2024

This is an open letter to the Victorian government sharing concerns and recommendations to strengthen rental laws in favour of protecting tenants. The letter calls on the government to do things such as;

• Strengthen minimum rental standards
• Strengthen protection from no grounds evictions to protect people from being evicted after requesting repairs related to minimum rental standards.
• Calling on a rent freeze for any properties that do not meet minimum standards.
• Capping rent increases for properties that do meet minimum standards

“Despite rental reforms of recent years, many landlords are still failing to comply. If the government is going to the effort of regulating private rentals it must invest adequately in enforcement measures to ensure standards are upheld. Currently, inadequate enforcement means that when tenants fight for their rights, including for minimum standards to be applied, there is little protection from being punished by real estate agencies and landlords.”
