Submission to the Select Committee on Work and Care | October 2022

This submission will focus on a small number of the many areas in which the social security
system and public welfare programs fail to provide or support adequate care in the community. The
recommendations are high level and relevant across a range of social security, employment and
related policy areas.

The committee must take a more expansive and sophisticated view of care and caring labour, well
beyond the narrow scope of services provided through the labour market or conventional notions of parenting. It should not view care as something that must be commodified and remunerated in all its forms, but supported in all its diversity.
